New Skaters to KAHA

Information For New Skaters (2010-2011)

Are you considering having your child or children play hockey or you've already made the decision to play?  We are sure you have many questions!

A few things about KAHA and Cool Sports:

When you or your skater signs up to play hockey at Cool Sports, you become a Member of Knoxville Amateur Hockey Association.  KAHA is an organization that services the youth and adult amateur hockey players in East Tennessee.  We are the only organized Youth and Adult Hockey Association in East Tennessee.

  1. KAHA runs all House programs out of Cool Sports’ facility.  High School and Travel Programs may split time between Cool Sports and The Knoxville Coliseum.
  2. KAHA and Cool Sports are partners in offering the best hockey experience in East Tennessee.  We work together to bring you a quality House Program and Travel Program.
  3. KAHA is an all volunteer organization.  We operate on revenue received from Sponsorship and fund raising activities.  We do expect our Members to participate in volunteer activities (running the clock during games, keeping score, serving as team managers, and filling our coaching staff).
  4. KAHA and Cool Sports offer programs for the beginner through the expert levels. Cool Sports also offers Adult Hockey programs.
  5. The hockey program is administered by KJ Voorhees, Hockey Director at Cool Sports, and KAHA. KAHA's Board and volunteers work very closely with KJ to provide a great experience!

The following programs are currently offered:

Cross Ice - instructional league for our youngest skaters, ages 4-9.

Mites - instructional league for your skaters age 7 & 8, taking part in practices and game situations

The 2010-2011age chart is provided by USA Hockey, the governing body of youth and adult hockey in the United States.  KAHA and Cool Sports are Members of USAH and require that each skater within KAHA is also a Member.  USAH provides a mandatory insurance policy that must be obtained before your skater steps on the ice with KAHA/Cool Sports.  More information is provided below in the “Registering Your Skater” area.

Registering Your Skater

If you’ve made the decision to play hockey, you will need to register with KAHA and Cool Sports.  All registration documents will be found under Registration on the main menu. Before you register with KAHA/Cool Sports, you must register your skater with USA Hockey. Go to http://www.usahockeyregistration.com/ and register your skater.  This will require a credit card transaction.  Print 1-2 copies of the confirmation you receive. The identification number you receive will be used in KAHA/Cool Sports' registration process.

All registrations and payments must be deposited into the KAHA Drop Box at the rink.  Checks and credit cards are accepted, with checks being payable to Cool Sports.  Please do not try to pay at the front desk; all registration documents and payments must go through the KAHA Drop Box at the rink.

We offer hockey programs according to the following schedule:

Fall (8 weeks):  August - October

Winter (16 weeks):  October - March (Rookies (new skaters ages 4-9) may register either at the first 1/2 of Winter or the second 1/2 of Winter)

What's next?

Purchase required equipment or take part in the OneGoal Equipment Loan Out Program (skaters 4-9).  Your new skater (ages 4-9) is not required to purchase new ice skates; Cool Sports offers a loan out skate program for Cross Ice skaters.  Skate rental is free and skates must be returned after each skating session. Cool Sports does have a Pro Shop at the facility, privately owned.  The Ice Fanatic can be reached by calling 865-671-1666.  The Ice Fanatic offers a variety of ice hockey equipment and sharpen ice skates.

  1. Expect to receive emails from KAHA Registrar kahaadmin@charter.net , KAHA Secretary, trishownby13@bellsouth.net, your Team Manager, or KJ Voorhees (Cool Sports’ Hockey Director – kjv@coolsportstn.com).  YOU WILL RECEIVE EMAILS.  We do respect your privacy AND do need to reach you.  Please provide an up to date and legitimate email when registering with USAH!  Please also visit www.kaha.org on a regular basis.
  2. Be sure to have your skater at the rink in plenty of time to get dressed (for every practice and every game).  Too often, parents do not arrive early enough, and the process becomes a little stressful for our little ones.  Putting on hockey equipment takes time and patience!
  3. Contact KJ if you have any questions or concerns (865-218-4500 x223).  You may also contact the KAHA Registrar, Lisa Ingmand, at any time (865-966-3675).  The names and numbers for all KAHA Board Members are on the Main Menu under “Executive”.

We’re glad you’ve decided to experience the great game of hockey!  KAHA, Cool Sports and our exceptional volunteers, are working together in …

 “Giving Kids A Goal!”
